I've never decorated cakes, but I did go through a candy making phase. I used to buy flowers made of fondant that were fully dried and attached them to my candy creations w/ melted colored chocolate or icing.

Your cakes are looking better and better! I"ve never used the fondant stuff when I made flowers. I've used a frosting that dries hard. So I don't know if it is done the same way. Love the picures! ahhhh fabric shopping!
